Although post-high school educational costs are skyrocketing across the country, you’re in luck if you’re a member of the Army Reserve. Why? If you are a member of the Army Reserve, you are eligible for Army Reserve tuition assistance as a member of the Selective Reserves. In addition, you may also be eligible for assistance with state-funded education if you are a member of the National Guard.

What can you expect if you are a member of the Army Reserve and want help with tuition?

You can get a voluntary education as a member of the Army Reserve. They support your getting ahead in this way, and additional education can help you with promotions as your career progresses. You need to do the school on your personal time, but the Army Reserve’s tuition assistance makes it much easier for you to spend time studying instead of worrying about how to pay for courses. This arrangement is different from what the active duty Army offers, including MOS training for enlisted personnel and AOC for commissioned officers in their ranks.

So, what types of financial aid can you get?

Specifically, you could qualify for 100% scholarship for tuition up to $166/quarter hour or up to $250/semester hour (depending on whether your school is on the quarter or semester system). The annual total limit is $4500.

If you are an officer and are pursuing a bachelor’s degree, the USAR offers 75% assistance up to $250 per semester hour, or $166 per quarter hour, up to $4500 annually in total.

Eligibility Requirements

Personnel in the Army Reserve must meet certain eligibility rules to get tuition assistance. You would need:

Set your education goal to achieve a higher degree than your current degree already obtained

Be a drilling reservist and be in good standing.

Confirm that you have enough time in your current term of service to complete your course of study using the financial assistance you can access, for warrant officers or enlisted personnel.

There is essentially a service payback for commissioned officers. In that status, you would have to have four years or more of Selected Reserve service ahead of you after you finish the coursework for which you get scholarship financial aid.

In signing up for your independent study education, you have to comply with required Army Reserve procedures.

For spouses of enlisted personnel

If you are the spouse of U.S. Army personnel, you may qualify for the Spouse Education Assistance Program (EAP). Your service member spouse need to be assigned to duty in Korea, Europe, Japan, or Okinawa. The EAP covers educational expenses, with a cap of $350 per term.
